ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Olajide A. Smith is a digital entrepreneur, storyteller, and lifelong student of human nature. His life between the United States and Nigeria has given him a distinctive perspective on people, relationships, ambition, deception, and the secrets people keep behind carefully constructed lives.

He studied law at the University of Jos, Nigeria, but his fascination with storytelling began long before his legal education. As a teenager, he became captivated by the crime novels of James Hadley Chase, whose gripping plots, complex characters, and relentless suspense sparked a lifelong love of intrigue. His literary influences also include Michael Connelly, Agatha Christie and John Grisham.

He is particularly drawn to psychological thrillers that blend romance, betrayal, deception, suspense, and unexpected twists—stories that keep readers questioning what is true until the final revelation.

His writing is shaped by the diverse cultures, experiences, and observations that have influenced his life. He is fascinated by the contradictions within human nature: the gap between appearance and reality, the choices people make under pressure, and the lengths to which they will go to protect their ambitions, relationships, reputations, and secrets.

His stories explore survival, power, trauma, ambition, deception, and the complicated nature of human relationships, often asking one unsettling question: How well do we really know the people closest to us?

The Origin of Her Perfect Lies

Her Perfect Lies was not born as a novel. It was born as a movie.

Long before the first chapter was written, before the story ever found its way onto a page, its characters were already alive in Olajide’s imagination. They had names, personalities, ambitions, secrets, and destinies. He could see them moving through scenes in his mind as though the cameras were already rolling.

The idea began taking shape during the rise of Nollywood in the early 2000s—a remarkable era when Nigerian cinema was finding its voice and captivating audiences with stories of love, ambition, betrayal, family, wealth, deception, and the complicated realities of everyday life. As an avid admirer of psychological thrillers, the films of that era, and the remarkable actors who brought them to life, sparked his imagination. He began picturing certain actors in particular roles, imagining how their personalities and screen presence might translate into the characters he was creating.

In his mind, the movie began to unfold.

He could see the characters. He could feel the tension between them. He imagined the romances, the betrayals, the confrontations, the unexpected twists, and those seemingly insignificant decisions that would ultimately change the course of entire lives.

That cinematic DNA remains woven throughout Her Perfect Lies.

Readers familiar with the Nollywood of the early 2000s may recognise echoes of the personalities, mannerisms, presence, and distinctive character types that made that era so memorable. The characters in this book are fictional, but some may feel strangely familiar—as though they have stepped out of a movie we once watched, a story we once heard, or perhaps a life we once encountered.

For years, however, the story remained just that: an idea.

Then came COVID-19.

As the world slowed down and uncertainty became part of everyday life, Olajide found himself with something he had rarely had before—time to return to an idea that had been living quietly in his mind for years.

He could have written the screenplay he had originally imagined.

Instead, he decided to write the story as a novel.

And that decision changed everything.

What had once existed as scenes in his imagination began transforming into chapters and pages. Characters who had lived in his mind for years finally found their voices. Their relationships became more complicated. Their secrets became darker. Their motivations became clearer—and, in some cases, far more dangerous.

The movie that had existed in his imagination was becoming Her Perfect Lies.

What followed was not a quick journey. The manuscript underwent countless rewrites, revisions, additions, removals, and refinements. Scenes were rewritten. Characters evolved. Plot lines changed direction. Words were scrutinised and rewritten again. Thousands of edits later, the story that had begun as a movie decades earlier had finally become the book it was always meant to be.

And perhaps fittingly for a story about deception, not everything in Her Perfect Lies comes entirely from imagination.

Over the years, Olajide drew inspiration from stories reported in the media, remarkable and distinctive personalities he encountered, and his observations of human behaviour in different situations. He became fascinated by the contradictions that exist within people—the gap between who we appear to be and who we truly are, between what we say and what we secretly desire, and between the face we show the world and the person hiding behind it.

Those observations became the raw material from which the fictional world of Her Perfect Lies was constructed.

The result is a story that lives somewhere between imagination and reality. Its characters and events are fictional, but the emotions, behaviours, temptations, betrayals, fears, and consequences are rooted in the world we recognise.

And perhaps that is what makes the story unsettling.

Because the most convincing lies are rarely completely imaginary.

They usually contain a little truth.

Her Perfect Lies is ultimately a story of love, desire, ambition, deception, betrayal, revenge, and consequence—but beneath all of that lies a deeper question:

How well can we ever truly know another person?

Because sometimes, the person standing closest to us is the one hiding the most.

And sometimes, behind the perfect smile, there is a secret waiting to destroy everything.

Beyond the Writing

Beyond writing, Olajide is an avid sportsman and dedicated fitness enthusiast with ambitions of becoming a gym owner. After overcoming profound challenges in his own life, he rebuilt himself through discipline, physical training, and an unwavering commitment to personal transformation. That journey has profoundly influenced his understanding of resilience, human vulnerability, and the emotional battles people often fight behind closed doors.

He believes that the most compelling stories emerge when ordinary human desires collide with extraordinary consequences—and that beneath every seemingly perfect life, there may be a truth waiting to be exposed.

His guiding belief is simple: the most dangerous secrets aren't the ones we hide from strangers, but the ones we keep from the people we love.
